Permanent Impairment and Common Law
If your injury is permanent, you may be entitled to a lump sum under your scheme, and in some cases a common law claim for negligence.
Whole Person Impairment (WPI)
A percentage measuring the effect of your injury on your body or mind as a whole, assessed by a trained doctor using guidelines.
Statutory lump sums
Paid under the compensation laws based on your impairment, regardless of fault. Thresholds vary between schemes.
Common law claims
Claims for negligence, usually against an employer. Most schemes require a minimum impairment or a 'serious injury' finding.
Settlements
Settling a claim can end other entitlements. Get independent advice before signing any release.
